Hi subscriber,

Here's a thought, a quote, and a resource I wanted to share with you this Thursday.

I remember seeing a movie at the Toronto Film Festival on September 12, 2001. As we came out of the movie, my eyes adjusted faster than my mind. Did the events of the day before really happen? It seemed surreal.

I feel that way today. I watched yesterday’s events in Washington, D.C. with horror. I’m mourning today for so many things, from forces shaping our society to how the division over the past few years has affected some of my friendships.

And I’m trying to remember to practice the basics: Pray. Love. Pursue and speak the truth. Trust God.

I have a feeling I’ll need to keep reminding myself of these basics today, and that’s okay. Sometimes the basics are enough for the day.

Waking up weary. New restrictions. Political leaders traveling south for Christmas, and then saying, "Oops, sorry". The US yesterday.

I can't fix any of it. The doom-scrolling is less than helpful. All the arguments have been had, and yet they continue, getting ever nastier. As if we're going to beat each other into goodness. As if what I have to say hasn't already been said.

So here's my commitment. I'm going to be kind today. I'm going to make eye contact and stop to chat if I see you. I'm going to ask how you are, and listen to your answer. I'm going to smile at the sunshine. I'm going to thank the barista or a cashier or my colleague.

I'm going to live with the welfare of my neighbours in mind because it's the right thing to do. I'm going to hold a safe space for others. I'll pause to pray with or for you, if you like.

Bottom line: I'm going to do my best to live out my faith, as I follow the way of Jesus, who calls me to love God and love people; and who calls me to live with hope, even when the world feels a little lacking in it.

Peace to you today, friends.

Jen Pollock Michel is one of my favorite writers, and she has a new book coming out next month called A Habit Called Faith. She’s offering some preorder bonuses. You can read about them here.

If Jen writes it, I read it. I’m looking forward to this book.
Thanks for reading!
