Hi subscriber,

Here's a thought, a quote, and a resource I wanted to share with you this Thursday.

Luke 10 records Jesus sending out the 72 as an advance ministry team. When they return, they’re ecstatic about what God did through them. “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” (Luke 10:17)

Jesus agrees that their ministry is significant. In fact, he tells them that their ministries are part of the story of Satan’s defeat. “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.” (Luke 10:18–19)

I’m so glad that Jesus concluded with these words: “Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:20)

Be happy with ministry success, but never make that your identity. The best thing about you is that you are known and loved by God, and that your eternal future is certain. That’s far better than ministry success.

“The world is full of suffering indeed, and to turn our backs on it is to work a terrible unkindness maybe almost more on ourselves than on the world. But life indeed is also to be enjoyed. I suspect that may even be the whole point of it. I more than suspect that is why all the sons of God shouted for joy when he first brought it into being. And if that is the case, then the old woman playing shuffleboard in the sun and the long man standing in line with his children to get into Disney World are in their own ways praising God as truly as when they are serving supper in a shelter for the homeless or driving off at 2:30 in the morning to answer the panicky phone call of an alcoholic friend.”
