Hi subscriber,

Here's a thought, a quote, and a resource I wanted to share with you this Thursday.

I was trying to choose a Doctor of Ministry program. A mentor told me, “Don’t choose a program. Choose a professor.” I’m glad I took his advice.

I ended up studying under Dr. Haddon Robinson, author of Biblical Preaching. He taught me so much, not about preaching, but about life.

I’ve followed this advice a few times now. We don’t just learn content. We learn from examples. We benefit from seeing embodied faithfulness among those who are farther along than we are.

The mentor who gave me the advice, Stan Fowler, is someone who’s taught me much. He had a stroke on July 28. Please join me in praying for Stan’s recovery and for his family.

“Our very business [as pastors] is to teach the great lesson of self-denial and humility to our people, and how unfit is it then that we should be proud ourselves? We must study humility, and preach humility, and must we not practice it? A proud preacher of humility is at least a self-condemning man.”
