Hi subscriber,

Here's a thought, a quote, and a resource I wanted to share with you this Thursday.

God takes his church seriously.

I can’t imagine a stronger warning than this one:

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.” (1 Corinthians 3:16-17)

The Spirit of God dwells among the people of God corporately as a community. When we destroy that community, it’s a sin of the highest order.

“The Corinthians are God’s sanctuary, in which the Holy Spirit dwells,” writes Lionel Thornton. “Yet they are threatening this sanctuary with destruction by their sinful divisions … Their vainglory, jealousy and partisanship … is treachery to the common life. But worse still, it is a form of sacrilege.”

It’s a good reminder of how seriously God takes the church, and how seriously we should take it too.

“The church is the earthly outlet for God’s truth, the embassy that represents him … It is through the church being church, rather than primarily through individual believers each separately doing their bit, that the truth is upheld and commended to a watching world.”
