Hi subscriber,

Here's a thought, a quote, and a resource I wanted to share with you this Thursday.

I had a rough day yesterday.
  • My day-long appointment fell through as I was going out.
  • An important detail fell through for my book launch party tonight.
  • I received a rejection from a publisher.
Ever have one of those days?

None of these setbacks will matter for very long, but I felt them yesterday.

I went to bed remembering that God is still faithful. I often see this reminder from Ray Ortlund’s timeline, and it helped me last night:

I love these descriptions of Cyril Garbett, former Archbishop of York. They come from a biography written by Charles Smyth, and they give me hope for how God can change us over a lifetime:

“It was at Winchester and afterwards at York that his personality, while abating nothing of its force, lost almost all its harshness, as his kindlier virtues mellowed and matured and ripened in the golden autumn of his days.… I have tried to concentrate upon what to me is the supremely important and exciting thing—the spiritual growth of Cyril Garbett.”

“Throughout his life he was, in the fullest meaning of the word, a growing man.”

“One of the most notable characteristics of great men is that they continue to develop as they grow older. While the majority of men reach their maturity somewhere in middle life, there are a few rare spirits who never lose this gift of growth; and assuredly Cyril Garbett was one of them. He was always looking forward. Even when his physical and intellectual powers began to fail, he was growing spiritually to the very end.”

I talked to someone about the Book of Common Prayer the other day. He’s not Anglican, but he loves it, as I do. “I’ll never need another devotional book again,” he said.

I picked up a copy of The 1662 Book of Common Prayer earlier this year. It gently updates the text for contemporary use. Check it out if you’re interested.

The online book launch party for 8 Habits for Growth takes place tonight at 7 p.m. EDT. I'd love to see you online. Visit the event on Facebook and join me.
Thanks for reading!
