The Unknown Pastor
Right now, in a small town you've never heard of, there's a pastor starting his day at the church. He sits alone in his office, preparing a sermon, answering emails, and planning pastoral visits. He doesn't make much money and isn't well-known. Sometimes he wonders if his work is worth it, but he keeps serving.
Long ago, this man had big dreams. He wanted to make a difference, inspired by famous pastors. But unlike them, he's remained mostly unknown and often unappreciated. Many in his church love him, but not everyone. Some people criticize his sermons for being too long or too short. Others don't like his wife. Some compare him to past pastors they preferred more. Despite this, he continues to serve.
Today, he's feeling weary and questioning whether his ministry has made a difference. He’s facing the same stresses: unpaid bills at home, endless meetings at church, a growing task list, and the administrative tasks that always find their way back to him. He’s been at it so long that he knows the rhythm of the year, and each year he wonders if he has the energy to go through the cycle again.
He's been at it for a long time without seeing the changes he hoped for. Yet he keeps going. He knows he'll never be famous or build a big platform. His church website isn't impressive; he inherited a mission statement for the church that he doesn’t like and can’t change. The church he pastors has some wonderful people, but it has its share of quirky people too.
The church has grown. Some people have come to faith in Christ. But more have transferred from the church across town. This pastor wonders if, one day, these people will leave his church, just as they left the church before.
His dreams are simple: to serve faithfully, grow in love for Christ, and help others do the same. He wants to keep loving his wife, and he wants his kids to know the Lord. Some days he’s not sure how well he’s doing at any of this.
One day, when he retires, few will notice. People will say nice things at his party and quickly move on to find a new pastor. He'll join the many who served before him and were forgotten. But this pastor is faithful and loved by God. He's been placed in his church to serve on God's behalf.
Behind all the scandals and famous pastors, there are many like him—serving quietly, often discouraged but still dedicated. As I get older, I admire these pastors more and more. They set the example of what a true pastor should be: not ambitious for fame but faithful in service.
This pastor represents what most pastors are like—faithful servants behind the scenes. I'm grateful for him and others like him. We need more of them. I pray that as he sits in his office today, he knows that his ministry matters to the Lord and is a blessing to people. We are blessed to have pastors like him.
